As if you weren’t expecting it already, Sydney Sweeney promised that the long-delayed third season of Euphoria would be “unhinged.”
In a new interview with Empire magazine, the actress gave a light tease of the show’s return while discussing her deep attachment to her character, Cassie, as well as working with showrunner Sam Levinson. She praised Levinson’s openness to pushing things as far as possible, calling him “a brilliant filmmaker to work with, because I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go crazier,’” Sweeney said. “And he’s like, ‘I’m all in.’”
She then added, “And this season is unhinged” — but declined to offer any further details.
As for her character, Sweeney said she has a huge “spot” in her heart for Cassie and holds her “really close and dear.” She continued: “She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love. It could be a sad version of love, as well. It’s so much fun to play a character that is as crazy as she is.”
Sweeney is still filming Euphoria Season Three, which finally went into production earlier this year, three years after its second season aired in 2022. Many factors contributed to the delay, which began to pile up after actor Angus Cloud, who played fan favorite Fezco, died of an overdose in 2023. After that, reports emerged that the season three scripts were facing challenges and required rewrites, while work was further delayed by the Writers Guild of America strike. Also complicating production were the busy schedules of Sweeney and many of her co-stars — including Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Colman Domingo, Hunter Schafer — as well as Levinson.
Season Three of Euphoria is finally set to return in 2026, though an exact release date hasn’t been revealed yet. The most significant detail about the Season Three story arc known at this point is that it will include a time jump from where Season Two left off, so viewers can expect the cast to have aged out of high school. Much of the core cast will return, alongside newcomers Sharon Stone, Rosalía, Marshawn Lynch, and Asante Blackk.
