Days before Jimmy Wayne Carwyle allegedly crashed his car into the gate of actress Jennifer Aniston’s Bel-Air mansion, the Mississippi man repeatedly sent her unwanted social media, voicemail, and email messages, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
The alleged harassment culminated on Monday, May 5, when he rammed his car into Aniston’s front gate, damaging the barrier, and was detained by her security guard before police arrived and took him into custody, per the DA’s office.
Carwyle was charged with one count of felony stalking and felony vandalism. The 48-year-old man faces an aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm, and his arraignment has been set for May 8.
Prosecutors intend to request that his bail be set at $150,000. If Carwyle is convicted of all charges, he faces three years in state prison, said the DA’s office.
“Stalking is a crime that can quickly escalate from harassment to dangerous, violent actions, threatening the safety of victims and our communities,” District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “My office is committed to aggressively prosecuting those who stalk and terrorize others, ensuring they are held accountable.”
According to NBC News, Carwyle frequently posted about Aniston on social media prior to the incident and believed that unnamed forces were keeping them apart. “If someone out there can reach Jennifer Joanna Aniston Carwyle, let her know about the corruption going on trying to keep Me from her, you will be Blessed!” he wrote in a post last fall.
“I really hate that this happened to Miss Aniston, this was terrible,” his childhood friend, Marty Merritt, told the outlet. “But since it did, the only thing I hope is this would get enough attention, attention that could get Jimmy some help. He needs some serious help. This is rock bottom.”
