Practical Magic 2, the sequel to the 1998 movie, will arrive on Sept. 18, 2026. As previously reported, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will reprise their roles as Gillian and Sally Owens, a pair of sisters with unintentionally fatal attractions to men. The original movie follows their quest to rid themselves of the unfortunate curse, which includes bringing back an abusive ex and downing cocktails. Though the original film struggled commercially and critically, both actresses told Rolling Stone they’re proud of the film in a 2024 oral history of the beloved “midnight margaritas” scene.
The cult classic film was adapted from Alice Hoffman’s eponymous book, and directed by Griffin Dunne. This version will be directed by Susanne Bier, working from an Akiva Goldsman-crafted screenplay. Variety reports that the upcoming film is adapted from a later book in Hoffman’s Practical Magic series.
Warner Bros. announced the movie’s release date with an ominous trailer featuring Kidman and Bullock chanting, “Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. Sept. 18, 2026.” Bullock and Kidman will produce the film alongside Denise Di Novi.
Speaking with RS for the “midnight margaritas” oral history, Bullock said, “’Hollywood’ made the movie and fully leaned into it. They may have regretted it once we got eviscerated, but they were brave enough to make it back then, so for that I am so grateful.” Kidman added, “I just remember loving the film. I won’t be pulled off it if I love it. And I love it!”
In 2019, Warner Bros. attempted to make a television show from Rules of Magic, another book in Hoffman’s series, but plans sputtered. This time, it’s full steam ahead on a new entry into the Practical Magic franchise.
