What better than a demonic, invisible creature to bring you and your partner together (like, literally)? On Monday, the Michael Shanks-directed film Together dropped its first trailer, capturing Dave Franco and Alison Brie on their journey to mending their relationship, but maybe with the help of an unknown creature that might make things worse. The film is out July 30.
The trailer opens with a couple seemingly struggling with their relationship, like issues of complacency and feelings of real love, after moving into a new home. (Of course, in true horror fashion, it’s a house away from the city and near a seemingly deserted forest.)
The trailer teases the pair facing relationship struggles before sharing a passionate kiss that bizarrely results in their lips getting stuck together. It also shows Franco’s character seemingly becoming possessed. The trailer juxtaposes the horror onscreen with the happy sounds of the Turtles’ Sixties classic, “Happy Together.”
“Listen to me, listen to me. We’ve got to get out of here,” says Brie’s character before scary clips are shown of each of their bodies being taken. The trailer’s end implies that the pair starts to get physically attached as the trailer closes with Brie grabbing a saw and pouring whiskey in Franco’s mouth “for the pain.”
“Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other,” reads a synopsis of the film. “With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.”
The film premiered at Sundance in January and later played at SXSW in March. Brie and Franco — who are a real-life couple — previously worked together on 2020’s The Rental and 2023’s Somebody I Used to Know, which he directed but did not star in. It is also set to open this year’s Sydney Film Festival.
