Melbourne Recital Centre’s 2025 winter program is set to surprise and inspire.
Across May and June, four innovative performances are breaking boundaries and reimagining what this iconic venue can offer. From avant-garde dance to genre-defying music, these shows promise an experience far beyond the classical tradition.
Here’s what’s coming:
Erwan Keravec – 8 Pipers for Philip Glass + Nat Bartsch
May 5th, 7.30pm
Philip Glass like you’ve never heard before. French bagpipes take centre stage as Erwan Keravec and crew reimagine the minimalist master’s early works creating a sonic landscape that’s raw, strange, and totally mesmerising. Paired with a solo set from local favourite Nat Bartsch, this night is about transformation through sound.
Last and First Men – NEON DANCE
June 7th – 8th, 7.30pm
Take a deep breath, then dive into a sci-fi trip narrated by Tilda Swinton herself. In this visually arresting piece, film and dance come together to explore the fate of humanity, soundtracked by Jóhann Jóhannsson’s haunting final score. It’s cerebra and visceral. Part of RISING 2025.
Pigeons – Speak Percussion
June 13th- 14th, 7.30pm
What happens when machines, clay, and chaos collide? You get Pigeons – a full-throttle, no-rules performance that turns percussion into something wild and weird and wonderful. Think rhythm-driven anarchy with a heartbeat. Part of RISING 2025.
Jessica Pratt
June 5 – 6th, 7.30pm
Jessica Pratt’s voice doesn’t just sing, it haunts. Armed with a nylon-string guitar and a gift for songwriting that floats somewhere between 60s folk and dreamy psych-pop, she’s earned cult status for a reason. Her latest album, Here in the Pitch, expands her sound and promises to cast a quiet spell over Elisabeth Murdoch Hall during two intimate nights. Part of RISING 2025.
