Fashion is cyclical, but there’s no doubt true style is timeless. The New Balance 1000 in new colourway “Dark Ice Wine” and 1906W in “Ice Wine” are proving just that, making waves in sneaker culture as the must-have staples in any shoe rotation.
Recently, Rolling Stone AU/NZ and New Balance hit the streets of Melbourne to capture how people are styling these silhouettes in the latest colourways.
Turns out, as sneakerheads embrace the resurgence of ’90s and Y2K aesthetics while keeping comfort at the forefront, the New Balance 1000 and 1906W have become the go-to choice for those who prioritise versatility and self-expression.

For many, the appeal starts with comfort. “They feel good, and you can just walk around in them all day,” record producer and musician Alejandro Abapo says. Function meets fashion, making them adaptable to any setting, from the city commute to an evening out.
“I walk a lot, so I need my shoes to work, but also look good while doing it. I feel like I can wear these all day,” fashion content creator Tinman adds.
With its sculpted sole and bold overlays, the New Balance 1000 is futuristic yet nostalgic, embodying the early 2000s aesthetic. The new Dark Ice Wine colourway features metallic purple tones accented by black and silver details, creating a contrast that pairs effortlessly with oversized denim, structured outerwear or relaxed tailoring.

“Today I’m wearing a shirt by Vaucluse, pinstripe blue, and I’ve also got my New Balance 1000s on as well, I absolutely love them,” Dane says. Another interviewee wore his with track pants, a grey tank and blue cap, proving the sneakers aren’t confined to one aesthetic.
On the other hand, the New Balance 1906W is all about sleek, all-day wearability. The 1906W features Phantom Fit technology, where the upper is designed as one seamless welded piece for a streamlined look and enhanced durability. It comes in a new Ice Wine colourway, which blends soft pinks and cool greys, making it a perfect match for neutral, tonal outfits or layered Y2K-inspired fits.
“I used to watch Seinfeld at home,” says Cheets Wij. “You can draw a lot of inspiration from what Jerry or Kramer were wearing.” For Alejandro, it’s about blending influences. “I’m mixing a bit of the 90s with the Y2K aesthetic,” he shares. The sleek profile of the 1906W makes it easy to wear with relaxed office slacks or even sports-inspired silhouettes.

Regardless of trends, self-expression remains key. Accessories, personal styling, and creative layering turn these sneakers into statement pieces. “I love a good accessory. A bit of jewellery, like this Never Never, one of my mate’s brands, which is pretty cool,” Marcus says.
The ability to dress them up or down makes both the New Balance 1000 and 1906W a dream for those who see sneakers as an extension of their everyday style. “It’s got versatility,” says Andy Strudwick. “[The shoe] is something you can dress up with a nice outfit, but also dress down with a comfy work-from-home outfit as well.”
Melbourne’s most fashionable men have spoken. With their streamlined design, clean new colourways, and all-day comfort, the New Balance 1000 and 1906W represent a movement towards effortless style.
