The Avicii estate has released the fan-favorite version of “Forever Yours” from the late musician’s performance at Ushuaia in 2016. “Forever Yours – Tim’s 2016 Ibiza Version” incorporates a flurry of ideas the artist born Tim Bergling envisioned while working on the record in the studio. In a 10-minute scene from the archives used to create the documentary Avicii — I’m Tim, he buzzes with excitement about the unfinished recording.
“It’s so damn epic,” Avicii says in the clip. He works through ideas about the build up to the pre-chorus, how the melodies can be tweaked for maximum euphoria, and where to place the guitars and trumpets.
Avicii was unable to release the final recording of “Forever Yours” before his death. The musician died from suicide in April 2018, two years after he retired from touring. Ushuaia 2016 marked his final performance. In 2020, Kygo and Sandro Cavazza released a tribute version of the record in his honor. They similarly shared a behind-the-scenes video about the creation of the song.
“I had shown it to Tim two days before starting the tour and Tim had come up with an incredible first demo that he asked me if he could play at Ultra,” Cavazza said in the video. “That was four years ago and I’ve lost a friend since. This version of Forever Yours is a tribute to Tim that me and Kygo has put together to honor what he has meant to both of us. He was Kygo’s biggest idol and his biggest inspiration and that’s what has made this tribute possible.”
Avicii — I’m Tim premiered on Netflix on December 31st. The documentary includes previously unreleased footage from the producer’s last performance and uses past recordings to allow him to narrate the film. “This is a film where Tim himself is the narrator and he shares his inner self in a way we haven’t heard before,” Netflix said of the 95-minute documentary in a synopsis. “Through himself and everyone close to him — family, artist colleagues and best friends — we get to know Tim — the boy behind Avicii — for the first time.”
