A gorgeous new track just dropped from Banjo Lucia.
“Cartwheel” marks the Fremantle-born singer-songwriter’s first release since her 2022 debut EP Peccadilloes.
Described as a reflection on “the fragility and joy of human connection,” the track was produced by Julia Wallace (Stella Donnelly), mixed by Jake Webb (aka Methyl Ethel), and mastered by Björk’s engineer Heba Kadry.
Speaking about the new single, Lucia shares: “’Cartwheel’ is a song about falling in love and the cyclical nature of growth. It’s about how you can learn so much about yourself and try to do everything right, but you can still ultimately be taken out at the knees by life and what it throws you. And that’s the joy of it.”
You can watch the accompanying video below – it’s perfectly lo-fi, filmed in a garden with friends, and, of course, there’s some cartwheeling.
Following the release of Peccadilloes, Banjo was picked by Rolling Stone AU/NZ as one of ten acts to catch at BIGSOUND in 2022.
“Banjo Lucia is a passionate singer-songwriter steeped in a deep love for the craft and tradition, with an ability to turn mundane details into profound familiarity and transport the listener into the centre of her experience as if it was their own,” we wrote.
“The metamorphosis of this is evident in her debut EP Peccadilloes, a collection of songs that detail various intimate facets of her own experience with grief, love and growth. Hailing from one of Australia’s most prominent musical families, Lucia has drawn inspiration from the likes of Frank Ocean, Björk and Julia Jacklin, and brings both vulnerability and strength to every song she creates.”
Since then, Lucia has been performing headline shows and touring across Australia, the UK, and Europe, sharing the stage with artists like Donnelly, Sharon Van Etten, and Ásgeir.
