It’s “RNZŌ SZN” (pronounced “Renzo Season”). That’s the title of the debut album of 18-year old RNZŌ (Tyrenzo Tuitama), which released just last week.
The nine tracks on RNZŌ SZN are a combination of his love for hip-hop and UK garage, and he drew on his youth spent in a literal garage singing with friends.
Born in Hamilton and raised in Kawerau, he released his debut single “Taniwharau” last August, even getting it remixed afterwards.
Now, RNZŌ is labelled as the youngest performer for Auckland’s Laneway 2025, which takes place tomorrow (February 6th). He’s on the bill beside big names like Charli XCX and Clairo.
RNZŌ is a Māori artist who describes his music as “unapologetically me.” The support of his dad, Jordan, kickstarted a lot for RNZŌ, who needed resources and gear to chase his dreams.
And his authenticity has caught the eye of listeners and industry figures alike, which led to an appearance at Boiler Room Aotearoa last year.

RNZŌ’s RNZŌ SZN is out now.
Rolling Stone AU/NZ: How did music influence you in your early life?
RNZŌ: Music has always been around in my life. My grandfather always sang in church and at events with his siblings and played the piano and guitar. My father played guitar and sang all throughout my life and I slowly picked it up myself. My earliest memory of music was Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange which my Dad would play to me as a kid. Music has always been in my life.
What artists influenced you growing up?
I didn’t really take influences from artists growing up. I more so took influences later in life as I found out music was my thing. My main influences now would be my mentors: Church & AP, deadforest and Dera Meelan. But most importantly myself. I make music around my life and my values.
When did you discover your passion for creating music?
During the 2020 pandemic my dad introduced me to the 2007 version of FL Studio, or Fruity Loops, and I taught myself how to make beats. [In] 2021 I bought the mobile version of the app and in 2022 bought the current version on my laptop. At the time I had aspirations of becoming a producer, till I met my mentor Church who encouraged me to start writing and rapping.
What are some career highlights so far?
So far my favourite career highlight would be performing at Boiler Room Aotearoa. I was invited by DJ Seymore as a part of his set. Was an electric night and a great display of Māori talent.

Tell us about your album single “Atlaniz”. What’s the track about?
“Atlaniz” is about the lives that me and my best friend Lani were leading at the time. Late wakeups, aspirations of success, school etc. Two broke Polynesian boys trying to win in this crazy world. Having deadforest on as a Māori/Pacific Islander artist further reiterating our story of us striving to the top, putting our people even more on the map.
And what about your debut album?
This album is a display of the variety that I can produce and [I hope it will help] to fully establish myself as one of the top rappers in NZ and AU.
Are you excited to be performing at Laneway? Any acts on the lineup you’re keen to see?
Yes, I am very grateful for the opportunity to be performing at Laneway, taking it in my stride and working the stage as well as I can. I have to record Beabadoobee for my little sister and I’m pretty keen to watch Clairo.
What kind of personality traits and values do you believe it takes to succeed in the music industry?
In my own personal opinion I believe uniqueness, awareness of identity, and a vision are three important traits to have to succeed. My knowledge of who I am sets me apart from other artists, and it’s very evident in the music I curate.
How would you describe your music to a potential fan?
I would say it’s unapologetically me. Raw, rugged, yet at the same time calculated and intelligent.
What are your goals for 2025 and beyond? What can fans expect from you this year?
My goals for this year are to release yet another album sometime, perform more shows/festivals, and to buy a car!
