WHO SHOT SCOTT is keeping the intensity high all the way through 2024.
His latest single, “GLITCH MFERS”, continues the Iranian-New Zealand rapper’s unapologetic streak of raw honesty, tackling personal experiences with racism and oppression.
“I wrote this track about a specific high school bully who used to be super racist toward me,” WHO SHOT SCOTT shares. “I really wanted to channel a certain type of anger and hostility that I felt could only be accurately depicted if it came from my adolescence.
“Personally, I feel the teenage years are some of the most colourful and rich goldmines I can pull from as an artist, there’s so much raw, underthought energy in there which speaks profoundly into who we are now. Sure I grew up, I forgave, I’ve matured a little bit, but at my core I was once unfiltered, and it’s beautiful to know I can always pull from that if my art needs it.”
The track’s dizzying production is matched by a typically surreal and visceral music video, created with longtime collaborator Connor Pritchard.
“GLITCH MFERS” follows the chaotic single “THE DATA“, a rallying cry for anti-conformism. Both tracks will feature on WHO SHOT SCOTT’s upcoming EP BRAIN (Side B) – the follow-up to February’s BRAIN (Side A).
“I had one of the most soul-sucking experiences of my life earlier this year at a music seminar hosted by perhaps the biggest social media company in the world. The whole event kept pushing a false narrative that they were there to help artists, when in reality, there was a clear self-serving agenda to keep us in the grips of their business-first, art-second mentality… This song is my ‘f*** you’ to the conformity,” he said about “THE DATA”.
“I’ve realised the only thing that will make me fit into the world is being absolutely honest and authentic to my core, that just comes with a bit of maturity I suppose,” the rapper told Rolling Stone AU/NZ about his earlier work.
