When will Australian R&B receive its deserved flowers?
Continuing to strengthen the argument for what’s probably the country’s strongest current genre, Melbourne artist r.em.edy released her newest single, “feels like (uh)”, last Friday. She’s another name on the growing list of incredibly talented local female R&B artists, though her versatility helps differentiate her from peers.
Releases like “Drive Thru”, “613”, and “I’m Fine” have established r.em.edy as an exciting talent, but she’s been proving her worth among Australia’s best for years.
Whether she’s spitting creative bars reminiscent of Doja Cat on “WHAT IT IS (Nikki)” or doing the exact opposite on “feels like (uh)”, R.em.edy’s has shown she has all the tools to carve out a successful long-term career path for herself.
On “feels like (uh)”, r.em.edy channels her inner Kelly Rowland, invoking the same feeling one of Kelly’s early 2000’s hits produced. While the production is impressive, as are r.em.edy’s vocals, her pen is equally as good – often an overlooked aspect of a great R&B song.
R&B songs with catchy hooks can often be agonisingly slow, or maybe slightly too long for your attention to bear, but r.em.edy avoids both on “feels like (uh)”, the second verse’s pace and flow change adding a new layer.
Her vocals on the track create a sense of closeness – a side to r.em.edy’s voice that fans have been drip-fed for years. Additionally, the hook is immediately grabbing – hours after listening to the song, even if just for the first time, don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming the melody over and over.
Her willingness to experiment separates her from the crowded R&B field, and clearly she enjoys keeping fans and the industry on their toes. “feels like (uh)” follows her recent release, “high as hell (In the lobby)”, serving as a hint for what’s to come with an EP, Reckless, in the works.
Her last full-length project, 2022’s Last Summer, was impressive, and on current form, r.em.edy will be a major star in 2025.
