Nadia Reid has shared “Hotel Santa Cruz”, the latest preview from her upcoming album.
The track showcases the spontaneous recording process Reid embraced, entering the studio with half-written material and her band. Written during a trip to the Canary Islands, “Hotel Santa Cruz” is a freewheeling anthem with a nostalgic theme that reflects on big questions and the pull of home.
Reid explains: “I wrote this in Tenerife and it turned out to be quite hooky. It’s just a series of questions. I feel quite moved at the end, with the line ‘You are everything I’d like to be’. I always give myself goosebumps when I perform that line. But I’m not sure who I’m referring to. Sometimes I think it’s Angus or my children, or maybe this is a God thing, or it’s just my imagination.”
“Hotel Santa Cruz” follows previously released singles, the gentle “Baby Bright” and the driving “Chained Unchained”.
Since her 2020 album Out of My Province, Reid has made big life changes, including moving to the UK and becoming a mother to two daughters. Her new album Enter Now Brightness, made with guitarist Sam Taylor and producer Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, Marlon Williams), marks a shift from her folk roots, embracing a new sound.
For the first time in her career, Reid entered the studio with only half-finished ideas, embracing a more fluid approach to songwriting.“There was a revelation of: it doesn’t have to be finished, it doesn’t have to be a perfect song before it’s taken to the band,” notes Reid.
Fans won’t have to wait for the album’s release to catch Reid live. She has pre-summer shows lined up throughout November, joined by her band, playing in towns across New Zealand like Dunedin and Christchurch, with one show in Melbourne. Tickets are available via Banished Music here.
