Katy Perry can’t get enough of Australia. Following her recent AFL Grand Final headline performance, the pop icon is returning in 2025 for an arena tour, with shows scheduled in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth next June.
Perry performed at the 2024 AFL Grand Final at the end of September, capping a big few weeks for the singer. September saw the release of her transformative new album 143, which catapulted Perry straight back into the pop zeitgeist.
“I set out to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message,” Perry said about her new album.
It was hardly surprising that 143 was a global commercial success, reaching the Top 10 in the US, UK, and Australia. This country, in fact, fell in love with Perry’s new album more than most countries, with 143 making it to No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Perry has always had a strong connection with her fans Down Under. “I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final. See you in September Oi Oi Oi!” she said in a statement when her Grand Final performance was confirmed.
For those who didn’t witness that performance, the critics said it all. “Katy Perry wows crowd at AFL Grand Final,” 9News wrote, adding that Perry’s set was “a stunning performance.”
The Age wrote, “She gave us a slick, fast-moving set full of colour and movement, with strong vocals, good sound (courtesy of backing tracks, of course), and plenty of razzle-dazzle. It was a typically high-energy performance from a true showbiz trouper.” For The Guardian, the best moment came when Perry duetted with Australian icon Tina Arena on “I Kissed a Girl”.
Positive reviews for her live shows are nothing new to Perry.
In a review of her 2018 Auckland tour stop, the NZ Herald compared Perry to the likes of Britney and Beyoncé, writing that Perry’s “easy charisma and live vocals” were stronger than “many of her pop peers.”
Perry’s spectacular Las Vegas residency earned lots of acclaim, with Forbes saying it was “a sensory overload in the best possible way that feels like a mashup of Toy Story, a Dalí painting, a giant colour wheel and a benign drug trip.”
Of the same residency, Rolling Stone highlighted the importance of visuals in Perry’s show: “Still, the music was only part of the show. This being Katy Perry, the production was larger than life.”
In a strange turn of events last year, Perry performed at the coronation concert for King Charles III, and she even stood out there. According to The Independent, Perry “ruled over fellow headliners Lionel Richie and Take That, watched by a beaming King Charles and Queen Camilla.” When even royals are admiring your music, you know you’re doing something well.
So expect stunning visuals, an eclectic songbook, and the unexpected when Perry gets back to Australia in 2025.
