Alex the Astronaut is calling out our driving habits in their new single, fittingly named “Road Rage”.
The track addresses the chaos and inner turmoil Alex felt while reflecting on anger, injustice, and dissatisfaction following the pandemic.
“After COVID, I noticed I was really angry at the world,” Alex explains. “I wasn’t where I wanted to be in my relationships, career, or life in general, and I started taking it out on people on the road. I know, not great. My Grandma would not be proud.”
The song was produced by Gordi during late-night sessions at Alex’s apartment and a studio in Barangaroo. Alex recalls, “I remember laughing when I realised what was happening. I’d beeped at a man who stopped in the middle of an intersection, and he gave me the finger. That’s when ‘Road Rage’ was born.”
Alex describes the collaboration with Gordi as chaotic but enjoyable. “She flew away, and a week later, I had this amazing track in my inbox.”
“Road Rage” is part of Alex’s upcoming EP, Rage and All Its Friends, set to drop on November 22nd. The EP tackles themes of grief, anger, and self-acceptance, reflecting Alex’s journey after a breakup and navigating a late autism diagnosis. It features collaborations with notable artists like Paul Kelly, Lisa Mitchell, and Benjamin Francis Leftwich.
This release promises to be Alex’s most personal yet, following her 2022 ARIA-nominated album, How to Grow a Sunflower Underwater.
“For a long time, I felt like a sad, cranky mess,” Alex admits. “This EP is about processing all those big emotions that were too overwhelming to ignore. It’s everything I have to say on the matter right now, and I hope it resonates with anyone who’s been through something similar.”
Additionally, Alex will perform on November 7th at Sydney’s Lansdowne Hotel, and the following night at The Night Cat in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Ticket information is available here.
