Christchurch artist Mousey showcased her third album, The Dreams of Our Mothers’ Mothers!, during her Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘In My Room’ session.

The Silver Scroll nominee performed “Opener” and “Die on That Hill” during the session, accompanied by her Winegum Records labelmate Goodwill (Will McGillivray), who also lent his production skills to Mousey’s album.

Five years since her debut album, Lemon Law, and two since its follow-up, My Friends, Mousey – AKA Sarena Close – returns to reflect upon half a decade of feelings, including the new perspective on generational cycles she attained upon becoming a first-time mother.

“As a songwriter, I write about my own experiences, especially the painful ones. This album is no exception,” she says.

“I’m also changing all the time which keeps me on my toes, trying to express the person I feel I am every two years. It’s a privilege that I get to discover and express myself in such a way and also that some people would be interested in watching it all go down.”

Mousey opened her ‘In My Room’ session with the trippy“Opener’, her low register vocals and repetitive chords slowly starting to become unsettling.

She followed that up with Die on That Hill,” which she says is a “cathartic rumination on the struggle and pain of family.”

The singer-songwriter’s third album will also feature “Home Alone,” with its kinetic late period-Fiona Apple energy, and “E.S.,” written during her time in Melbourne when she was “trying to create a song a day.”

“This track feels like my ‘spring song’ – it’s about embracing the way things have unfolded in my life, and while it carries some pain, it opens the door to new beginnings,” she adds.

To celebrate the release of her new album, which drops this Friday, October 18th, Mousey will tour around New Zealand next month, accompanied by Goodwill (check out his new Rolling Stone AU/NZ interview).
