The winners at the 2024 APRA Silver Scroll Awards have been announced.

The winners were revealed at a ceremony inside at Wellington’s St James Theatre on Tuesday night (October 8th).

The top prize, the Silver Scroll Award, saw Stan Walker, Anna Coddington, Georgia Lines, Mermaidens, and SKILAA battle it out in a strong category. In the end, Aotearoa’s top songwriting prize went to Coddington for “Kātuarehe.”

It was a crowning moment for Coddington, who boasts a long history with the awards, including placing in the top 20 four times since 2010.

For the Maioha Award, which honours waiata reo Māori and waiata reo rua, the finalists were Stan Walker, TAWAZ, and Jordyn with a Why. This shortlist was chosen by experts in Māori music, with Dame Hinewehi Mohi presenting Jordyn with a Why with the award on the night for “He Rei Niho.” It was second time lucky for the rising star, with Jordyn being a finalist for the Maioha Award last year for “Raumati.”

The APRA Best Jazz Composition Award went to Lucien Johnson for “Satellites,” while jazz pianist Mike Nock was inducted into Te Whare Taonga Puoro o Aotearoa | New Zealand Music Hall of Fame by Gregory O’Brien MNZM.

Karl Sölve Steven was a double winner, earning Tohu Paerangi | APRA Best Original Music in a Series Award with Rob Thorne for Black Coast Vanishings, and Tohu Pūmanawa | APRA Best Original Music in a Film Award with Jason Smith for Never Look Away.

Several performances also took place on the night, including AJA, Iris Little, and Riki Gooch covering Coddington’s eventual winning waiata “Kātuarehe” and Bazurka’s ensemble take on SKILAA’s “Jenny Greenteeth.”

Last year’s Silver Scroll Award was won by The Beths for “Expert in a Dying Field,” while MOHI was given the Maioha Award for “‘Me Pēhea Rā,” co-written with Hēmi Kelly, Amy Boroevich (HINA), and produced by Noema Te Hau III.
