Electronic heavyweights Montell2099 and What So Not have joined forces for a massive trans-Tasman collab with their debut collaboration, “Skyline.”
Loaded with FM-heavy beats and slick switchups, the song rides on a signature Montell2099 buildup, while Australian singer-songwriter Lucy Lucy’s ice-cool vocals bring a hypnotic edge.
“Skyline” was originally born during Montell2099’s US tour and got a fresh twist in the studio via What So Not, transforming it into a huge EDM anthem. The pair were quickly confident in the song’s potential – already road-testing it in live sets, “Skyline” has already become a crowd favourite.
Montell2099 shares, “The process for making ‘Skyline’ was super fun and experimental. I had an idea that I was stuck on for a while and I showed it to Chris and he flipped it on its head. He completely changed the direction and the sound and gave the idea some new life. He started playing the idea out at shows and the response was mad, so we decided to lock back in and polish it off.”
What So Not, the moniker of Chris Emerson, adds: “8 years ago, working on my debut album in the NZ Red Bull Studios I was introduced to a young Kiwi native on the cusp of his big break (producing a record for 21 Savage). It’s hard to believe after years of friendship, touring apart & together, ‘Skyline’ is our first offical release. I’ve watched Montell2099 grow into one of the most esteemed producers in our scene & feel we have come together at a pinnacle moment.
