In his first release since February, Stan Walker has shared the heartfelt waiata ‘KI TAKU AWA’ in celebration of Māori Language Week.
Going against industry norms, “KI TAKU AWA” precedes the english version, “Back to the River,” which will release on October 3rd.
“Usually, the English version comes out first, but for this project, I wanted to put te reo Māori out there first,” Walker says. “It’s about contributing to the continued presence of our reo in the world. Uplifting te reo Māori is a responsibility we all share in Aotearoa and this is how I feel I do it best – through waiata.”
In recent years, Walker has dealt with his fair share of personal hardships such as health battles and personal loss, with “KI TAKU AWA” being an honest reflection of his healing journey along the way. It serves as the follow-up to his previous 2024 release, “Māori Ki Te Ao,” which followed his previous single, “I AM,” part of the soundtrack for Ava DuVernay’s film Origin.
Throughout the healing process, Walker has been dedicated to deepening his connection with his family heritage and Māori roots. As an industry veteran and radio mainstay in a career spanning over 15 years, he has a deep understanding of how important culture representation and pride is in music.
“For me, ‘KI TAKU AWA’ is about going back to my awa, both metaphorically and physically,” Walker adds. “It’s about my healing journey, the idea of something ending before new life can begin. It’s deeply personal and touches on themes of my identity, losing my father, and ultimately my healing process.”
The waiata features silky, brassy production and, of course, Walker’s strong vocal presence. It’s produced by Matt Sadgrove, with help from Sons of Zions singer Rio Panapa, Tini Whetū member Tawaroa Kawana, and Trojan Tuna.
