Daily J don’t want the weekend to end on their new single, “Sunday Stitches.”

The upbeat track from the indie rockers captures the all-too-relatable Sunday night dread – the creeping anxiety as the workweek approaches.

“I wrote ‘Sunday Stitches’ about the emotional tug-of-war between succumbing to temporary relief and living a healthier lifestyle,” explains lead vocalist Jayden. “It underscores themes of self-awareness, introspection, and the courage to confront personal demons.”

The song was produced by Joe Faris, who also worked on their 2020 album Venus Ate Mars. The music video, shot in rural Ohakune by Dylan Martin, shows the band a bit worse for wear as they recover from a big Saturday night. You can watch it below.

“We shot it speed up so that when slowed down to the track tempo, it feels sludgy and blurred like a night out,” they explain.

“Sunday Stitches” is the second single from their upcoming album, following the sentimental “Happy Slides,” which marked their first new music since last year’s double EP release, Slush Honey Side A and Side B.

This release coincides with the end of Daily J’s successful UK tour, which featured sold-out shows in London, Manchester, and Bristol, and a performance at All Points East Festival in London alongside The Decemberists, Sleater-Kinney, and Phoenix. They also opened for Norwegian alt-pop star Girl in Red at Spark Arena in Auckland this July.

Our review praised their performance: “Daily J’s impeccable grooves had many clapping and bopping along throughout their set. At the end, they threw a couple of merch shirts into the crowd, a ritual more artists would do well to adopt. Their performance cemented them as a must-see band on the domestic front, especially at festival level.”

Brothers Jayden, Jonny, and Jesse Paul, along with good mate Rick Everard, had a standout year in 2023. They earned a nomination for Best Single at the Panhead Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards for their collaboration with Boo Seeka, “Lost in Time,” though they were narrowly beaten by L.A.B’s “Take It Away.” Their hit “Left Me Like Summer” was also recently certified Gold in New Zealand.

Daily J’s “Sunday Stitches” is out now.
