BTS member Jin will be a torchbearer at the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer. He’s slated to take part in the Olympic torch relay to spread the message of “harmony” and “peace,” per a statement.
The oldest member of BTS at age 31, Jin returned from his 18-month mandatory military service in June. The remaining six members of the K-pop group — comprising Jung Kook, V, Jimin, Suga, RM, and J-Hope — are currently serving their military duties.
Since Jin’s return, he announced he has plans to release a single and appear on television variety shows this year, Yonhap News Agency reported. “I’m working on recording music and filming variety shows,” he wrote in a statement to the news agency. “I’m trying to focus on my main job while showing my face as much as possible. The results will be out in a few months, so please wait a little longer.”
Jin joined the South Korean army in December 2022, while J-Hope and Suga enlisted in April and September 2023, respectively. RM, V, Jung Kook, and Jimin began their mandatory service in December. The K-pop supergroup will reunite in 2025. Jin spoke with Rolling Stone in 2021 after taking a year off from touring due to the pandemic, and said the break gave him a chance to sleep, exercise, play games, watch movies, and reflect.
“Especially when we were on tour, there wasn’t time to reflect on myself and figure out what gives me joy, what makes me relax,” Jin said. “Being off the road for a year gave me a chance to really reflect on what I want and who I am, and sort of learn to love myself.”
