Amanda Palmer, the “accidental Kiwi” and musical wanderer, is making an emotionally charged return to New Zealand next year.
After unexpectedly setting up camp here for over two years during the pandemic, Palmer is set to enchant Kiwi fans with songs from her forthcoming EP, aptly titled New Zealand Survival Songs, out on January 11th.
The EP was born and nurtured during her extended stay in the country, becoming a musical tribute to her unique Kiwi experience.
Known as one half of the iconic duo The Dresden Dolls, the US songwriter will embark on a short but highly anticipated summer tour. The tour includes headline shows in Queenstown, Auckland, and Wellington in January, followed by a hop across the Tasman Sea for two shows in Sydney and Melbourne (see full dates below).
Palmer’s latest single, “Little Island”, part of her upcoming EP and made with Fur Patrol frontwoman Julia Deans, is out now. Together, the duo craft a complex love letter to New Zealand, exploring our ties to the past and the meaning of ‘home.’
Reflecting on her unexpected Kiwi odyssey, Palmer shares, “It is still shocking to me that I wound up living in Aotearoa, New Zealand – unexpectedly – for over two years of my life, and that my young child was raised in a foreign country while Covid raged around the planet.
“I came to New Zealand at the end of a world tour and was supposed to be in the country for four show dates and eight days total. I wound up living within the borders for two and half years. Sometimes I wake up in New York and find myself short of breath and cannot believe that this all happened.”
Amanda Palmer’s “Little Island” is out now.
