Flying Out have announced an in-store advance listening party for the new boygenius record next week.
Fans can listen to The Record before the rest of the world at the Auckland record store at 5pm on Tuesday, March 28th ahead of its official release on Friday, March 31st. Flying Out will join dozens of other record stores across the globe premiering the indie supergroup’s debut studio album, and are also offering a ‘special litho-print’ to all who attend.
The hotly-anticipated album will arrive five years after the group’s formation in 2018. Composed of acclaimed singer-songwriters Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, the group have amassed a following despite busy personal schedules and a global pandemic.

Their debut self-titled EP was recorded across four days in the northern summer of 2018, and was followed by a US tour in November that year. They each brought with them one completed song and one song sketch to their first collaboration. Accordingly, the EP had a rotation of song leaders, with the remaining two amplifying and embellishing the lead’s individual style – not dissimilar to one of their frequently cited inspirations, Crosby, Stills & Nash.
In boygenius, Dacus’s songs boast her lyrical directness and heavier guitar tones; Baker’s are more paired back and tender; and Bridgers’s songs are typical of her renowned sad-girl stylings. The EP garnered plenty of acclaim and end-of-year accolades, and aroused in fans a dream of a hopefully-not-too-distant full length.
Though the wait has been longer than many might have hoped for their full-length debut, it looks like the payoff will be huge. Fans have been kept satisfied by the biggest releases of each artist’s solo careers – Baker’s Little Oblivions, Bridgers’s Punisher and Dacus’s Home Video.
With their forthcoming joint LP, the group will again be taking turns leading the songs, but their unique qualities blend more strongly across the first four singles released this year.
Surely a tongue-in-cheek reference to how long fans have waited, the debut album is titled The Record. Flying Out’s listening party is free and for all-ages so be sure to head along if you can.
boygenius’ The Record is out March 31st via Interscope Records (pre-save/pre-order here).
