Camp Cope’s third album, Running with The Hurricane, sees the trio make friends with peace, and in turn, they’ve never sounded more powerful or self-assured.
Lo-fi sparsity has always served Camp Cope well; this time, they’ve revved up the sound. Produced by Georgia Maq alongside Anna Laverty at Sing Sing Recording Studios, with contributions from Courtney Barnett, and Shauna Boyle of Cable Ties, the album is fine-tuned and fuller, resulting in a transformative, incredibly textured sound that allows the songwriting to soar.
Georgia Maq is a precise analyst of the ways in which people, despite their best intentions, harm one another. There’s a lot of pain to unpack, but Camp Cope does it deftly, and with hard-earned forgiveness. Ultimately, it’s a record which is the result of Camp Cope going through hell and coming out the other side. As Georgia Maq sings in the album’s title track, “the only way out is up“.
