Almost five years on from their last visit to the country, English indie icons alt-J have announced their return to Australia, sharing a run of tour dates this morning.
Last in the country in late 2017 in support of their third full-length album, Relaxer, the honorary Australians have – like the rest of the world – spent the last few years in a form of stasis. Returning to the stage late last year, the group began their large scale return with the release of new singles “U&Me” and “Get Better” and announcing their fourth record, The Dream, would emerge in early 2022.
Now, one day before the group unleash their latest album, they’ve also shared a number of Australian tour dates, which are set to kick off later this year.
Set to begin with a visit to Auckland on September 17th, alt-J will head over to Australia soon after, playing headline dates in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Perth.
In an interview with Rolling Stone UK, the group’s forthcoming album is described as both “the work of a band artistically grounded in the here and now” and a “masterpiece”, ultimately setting the stage for what is bound to be some of the group’s best work and most exciting shows to date.
“This is gonna sound really extreme, but something died on Relaxer and something was reborn on The Dream,” says keyboardist and vocalist Gus Unger-Hamilton. “We’ve entered a new life cycle.”
alt-J’s The Dream is set for release on Friday, February 11th.
