Melbourne rockers Captives have kicked off 2022 with a blistering new single, sharing “Gold” ahead of its official release tomorrow.

Set to appear on their forthcoming album, Return to Mars, “Gold” captures the classic Captives sound and wraps up it in a massive package that feels evocative of the legends of the hard-rock genre.

“‘Gold’ has been a bit of a journey,” explains Captives’ Matthew Damon. “It was one of the first tracks we put down for the new album but was a bit of a dark horse. Now it’s one of our favourites. It’s huge. No fuss. I’m looking forward to smashing this one live!”

A truly anthemic single, “Gold” is powered by pounding rhythms, slick guitar riffs, and powerful vocals from vocalist Aaron Damon. Doing things a little bit differently this time around, the track was written remotely, but eventually recorded at The Alamo in Melbourne, with production and mixing being overseen by Tyson Fish (Vance Joy, Mammal, Children Collide), and mastering handled by the great Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Cog, Shihad).

“It was the first time we’ve ever attempted writing digitally and remotely,” explains Matthew Damon. “Parts of the process were great, other parts were super challenging. For us, you can’t beat having all 5 of us in a room and creating tunes with the energy from us all.

“Thankfully, we were able to get into a studio in between Melbourne lockdowns and track the record. I think if anything, we’ve learnt to adapt our writing process and it’s only going to benefit us in the long run. In saying that, I can’t wait to be in a room with the band and just be able to play some songs again.”

Of course, if the idea of Captives in a room together playing “Gold” sounds familiar, then that might be due to their appearance on Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’ series last year, which saw them giving fans a sneak peek of this new track, along with previous single “Villain”, and forthcoming track “Miles Away”.

Captives are on track to release new album, Return to Mars, on March 31st, with a handful of live dates taking place around the country in support of the record. See below for full tour details.

Captives’ “Gold” is officially released tomorrow, while new album Return to Mars is released on March 31st, 2022.
