Melbourne trio The Grogans have returned with their first taste of new music in 12 months, sharing the infectious surf-rock anthem “Just a Kid” today.
Having been on the scene for over five years now, the trio – comprising best mates Quin Grunden, Angus Vasic, and Jordan Lewis – quickly found a rapidly-expanding fanbase thanks to their ability to blend the genres of surf, punk, blues, and even reggae into alluring tunes that feel custom-made to soundtrack the summer.
Releasing their latest album, Day / To / Day, back in 2020, the group have now emerged from a bit of downtime across the last year to share their latest single, “Just a Kid”. Equal parts slick and powerful, the surf-rock tune captures the classic Grogans sound, complete with an anthemic chorus, mesmerising guitarwork, and lyrics that speak to nostalgia, adolescence, and the impending arrival of what’s on the horizon.
“I find it fascinating how quickly life is changing at the moment and I couldn’t really articulate it in a ‘serious’ song,” explains Grunden. “Being a kid is so sick but you don’t entirely realise that until you’re older, I guess that’s what this song is all about.
“I’m trying to really embrace this confusion in between the changes and grasp the idea of getting older.”
With “Just a Kid” officially released today, The Grogans will also be issuing the track on a limited edition 7″ single. Pressed on transparent red vinyl and packaged with a bonus B-side, vinyl delays are set to see the single formally released early next year, though pre-orders are available now.
Meanwhile, The Grogans are also set to spend the first months of the incoming new rather busy, with a number of shows booked already, including a rather fitting spot supporting Hockey Dad on their upcoming east coast tour. Check out the full tour details below.
The Grogans’ “Just a Kid” is out now via Cousin Will Records, with physical copies available for pre-order now.
