Brisbane/Meanjin vocalist, producer, and DJ Squidgenini has performed recent single “Circle;Line” for the latest instalment of Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’, a series in which artists perform from home following a year which has seen live shows become a rarity.
If you’re someone who keeps their finger on the pulse of the Australian music scene, then there’s every chance you’re across Squidgenini. Hailing from Brisbane/Meanjin, the artist known as Bella to close friends has been spending the better part of a decade honing her craft as one of the country’s most exciting vocalists and producers.
Having first launched Squidgenini as a solo bedroom recording project back in 2013, it’s grown into something far greater, with countless live appearances being complemented by huge streaming numbers, with this year’s “All Made Up” not only closing in on a million streams, but also receiving attention from the likes of Jamz Supernova on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
In June of this year, Squidgenini unveiled her debut EP, SQUID. Described as “a resounding declaration of sovereignty and surrender”, the five-track EP illustrates Bella’s slick production and unique, genre-bending style, capturing an artist who is in the midst of an evolution in production attributes and artistic sensibility. Subtle grooves, luscious sound design, and creative harmonisation all combine to culminate an EP which is equal parts energetic and engaging – a rare feat for any artist.
With the new EP out in the world now, Squidgenini has donated some of her time to share a performance of EP centrepiece “Circle;Line”, a resonant track which showcases every facet of her creative capabilities. Backed by her band, the trio combine the deft, shuffling rhythms of drummer Charles Hill, the sleek keys of keyboardist Rohan Seekers, and the mesmerising vocals of Bella herself into one stunning package. It’s immersive and cathartic, and arguably one performance you’ll be unable to forget any time soon.
