More than a year on from her sensational debut on the show, Tones and I has once again showcased her skill on a global scale, performing “Fly Away” on Ellen.
Appearing on the Tuesday edition of the show, Tones served as the musical guest of the episode alongside American comedienne and Saturday Night Live cast member Melissa Villaseñor. Noting that her “new hit single ‘Fly Away'” had been streamed over 130 million times, DeGeneres introduced the world-beating Aussie musician, who performed her November single from a vineyard here in Australia.
Sporting pink hair and backed by a group of vocalists, the uplifting performance showcased exactly why the world has been enamoured by Tones and I ever since “Dance Monkey” went viral close to two years ago.
Upon its release, Tones explained that “Fly Away” was written about “chasing your dreams, reaching your goals and the realities that comes with it.”
“Being a busker, I obviously had bigger dreams,” she noted at the time. “However, this song is inspired by the way I thought I would feel versus the way I actually feel. I think that’s very powerful, at least to me.
“It’s about genuine happiness and what we think we need to have happiness versus what we actually want. The truth is we only ever want anything because we think it will make us happy, but it’s never that simple.”
Tones and I made her debut on Ellen just over a year ago, appearing on a February 2020 episode to share a mesmerising rendition of “Dance Monkey”. Receiving a standing ovation from the host, it was undoubtedly a major milestone in the career of Tones, who was met by even more acclaim when DeGeneres memorably hugged her after the performance and proclaimed “you’re awesome”.
