He’s been a beloved figure of the Australian music scene for more than 25 years, but after numerous albums, singles, and even bands, iconic Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson is going it alone with the release of his debut solo single, “Kapow!”.
Having fronted Grinspoon since their formation in 1995 when he was just 18, Jamieson has spent the vast majority of his life in the music scene. While every single one of their records has charted in the top ten, Jamieson has led a busy musical life outside of the group, too, having performed with one-off bands The Wrights and The Jack, and even fronting the short-lived (and rather underrated) The Lost Gospel.
In recent years though, Jamieson has supplemented his work in Grinspoon with solo appearances around the country, showcasing his work as a powerful performer all on his lonesome. Now, this solo career has moved into the studio with the release of his debut single, “Kapow!”.
“I had this music that had been floating around a little while and so I thought it would be good to put it out, more for me than for anything else,” Jamieson explained in a statement. “‘Kapow!’ will be the first song I release.
“It’s about that thrill and sense of wild abandonment one feels when falling in love for the first time; that kind of precipice moment where you stand and feel exhilaration and a rush – when everything is everything. I’ve actually been playing ‘Kapow!’ in my live sets for a year or thereabouts…. I’ve been DM’d on socials asking about this mystery song in the set.”
Featuring additional guitars and production courtesy of Davey Lane (You Am I), “Kapow!” is exactly what one would expect from a solo Phil Jamieson single, with his iconic, soaring vocals fronting a heartfelt, impassioned composition that slides effortlessly into his vast body of work.
“Kapow!” is set to be released on an upcoming 7″ single alongside the yet-to-be-released “Rubberband”. Copies of the single are available for pre-order now (both individually and in bundles) via Jamieson’s website, while he is also set to embark on an east coast tour in late March, with tickets available now.
