With the Pierce Brothers gearing up to release their new album, Into the Great Unknown in just a matter of months, the pair have shared their latest single – “Brother” – alongside a run of Victorian tour dates.
Released today, the studio version of “Brother” comes following years of live performances of the track, with the crowd favourite being described as something of a “crescendo-building indie folk anthem”. Beginning with unassuming guitarwork, the track rises in intensity as it goes along, adding in drums and percussion as the rich harmonies tend towards a mesmerising solo and powerful final chorus.
Featuring production from Jan Skubiszewski (John Butler, The Cat Empire), “Brother” is exactly what fans have come to expect from the Pierce Brothers, with its masterful composition almost custom-built to see the group dominate the global music scene.
The track also comes paired by a music video, directed by Patrick Pierce, which intercuts old family footage with a humourous take on sibling rivalry.
“We wanted to juxtapose the earnestness of the song with a bit of a piss-take,” Pat explains. “We went in there with the intention of playing the whole thing straight, but then when Justin (our older brother) said he could drop in, we thought it would just be way funnier if we tried to do an honest-to-God straight performance, and he just walks through and messes it up for us. We couldn’t stop laughing at the thought of it so we figured, why not?”
While the single is officially out today, the duo have also used the opportunity to announce a Victorian tour, which is scheduled to kick off next month. Beginning with a sold out show in Wonthaggi, the pair will trek around the state for most of the next two months, including a headline performance at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, and a trip up to Byron Bay for the 2021 edition of Bluesfest.
Pierce Brothers’ “Brother” is out now, while Into the Great Unknown will be released on March 5th via DITTO, with pre-orders available now.
