Lupa J will leave you speechless with their appearance on Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’, a series in which artists perform from home during a year which has seen live shows become a rarity.
It was just over a month ago that the global music scene was welcoming the arrival of To Breathe Underwater, the latest full-length record from the magnetic Lupa J (the musical moniker of Imogen Jones). Having been on the scene for a number of years now, local fans have delighted in watching them blossom into the artist they’ve long been destined to become.
With To Breathe Underwater arguably standing tall as one of the year’s finest releases, Lupa J was kind enough to record an absolutely spell-binding version of recent single, “This Suburb”. As Lupa J explained upon its release, the track is arguably one of the “most raw and vulnerable” they’ve ever created.
“It sits a little outside my ‘usual’ pop-dance style but I think it might be my personal favourite on the album,” they explained. “I don’t always feel up to being so lyrically honest and emotional, sometimes I just want to make techno tracks with little to no vocals – but when I feel capable & ready of writing a song like this it’s a really incomparable, cathartic experience.
“This one still makes me teary to listen to sometimes – it’s about the intensity of an attachment that’s to not only a person but a place and a life you’ve become so wrapped up in together.”
Performing the track in a sparse home environment, Lupa J’s rendition of the track sees them accompanied by a luscious backing track as gorgeous vocals are complemented by the sparse plucking of a casual violin. It’s thrilling, it’s powerful, and it’s exactly what you need in your life to make this year feel much better.
