Macario De Souza has made his long-awaited return with music from his Kid Mac alias, sharing the infectious “Good Life” today as his latest – and possibly, greatest – single.
Having made his start in the world of media as a filmmaker, and releasing exceptional productions such as the acclaimed documentaries Bra Boys and Fighting Fear, De Souza soon found himself as something of a modern day renaissance man as he branched out into the world of music as well.
Sharing a number of singles and albums across the last decade, Kid Mac found himself touring constantly and working with names such as twenty one pilots, Baker Boy, Sampa the Great, and more on Red Bull’s Behind The Bars podcast, all while building his reputation as one of the most promising artists on the scene.
Having last released music by way of 2014’s “Higher”, his fans have anxiously been awaiting the release of new material, with the recent announcement of new single “Good Life” helping to scratch that itch. Equal parts breezy, hazy, and bouncy, it has all the hallmarks of a perfect summer anthem, evoking stylistic comparisons to the likes of The Beautiful Girls or Milky Chance at its start, before showing its teeth as it brings together his love of indie, hip-hop, and electronic music.
Co-written with Billy Fox, and featuring the talents of Chris Collins and George Georgiadis on mixing and mastering, respectively, Kid Mac explains that the track is something of an introspective look at the battle that rages within.
“‘Good Life’ is an exploration into the two wolves that live in all of us, good wolf vs evil wolf battling it out for the loudest howl at the moon,” he explains. “Sonically it’s a hybrid of genres that starts off almost folky and builds to big drum machine breakdown with electronic undertones. Musically it’s a journey much like the story being told.”
The track also comes accompanied by a brooding music video, directed by Kid Mac himself, which helps to contextualise the track with its cinematic visuals.
“Every time I write songs, I’m automatically writing the script for the visuals to match at the same time which is a blessing and a curse,” he notes. “The song feels cinematic, so I wanted the visuals to be film-like too.
“It’s thought-provoking and brings a new element of the narrative to the story. We shot this video during the Covid-19 lockdown so the concept was based around having limited people on set,” he adds. “I especially had fun editing the group section at the end. The result is a little dark which suits the world of ‘Good Life’ perfectly.”
Kid Mac is set to officially release “Good Life” on Friday, October 16th, with the track ostensibly serving as the first taste of his forthcoming – and long-awaited – third album.
