Mariah Carey has opened up about an “uncomfortable” appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show 12 years ago where the talk show host pressured the singer into confirming her pregnancy.
In a new interview with Vulture, Carey reflected on the moment in which Ellen DeGeneres “forced” her to reveal she was expecting while appearing on the show – which ended up with the singer miscarrying shortly after the revelation.
In the 2008 clip, which resurfaced again recently following allegations of DeGeneres creating a “toxic workplace”, the host is seen prodding Mariah for an answer to whether or not she was pregnant, to which the “We Belong Together” singer warned she wasn’t happy to “discuss that”.
Refusing to let it go, DeGeneres brought out champagne and urged the star to take a sip.
“I can’t believe you did this to me, Ellen,” Mariah said in the clip. Ellen replied, “Let’s toast to you not being pregnant if you’re not pregnant.”
Speaking of the moment to Vulture, Carey said she had a “hard time” following the announcement, particularly after she miscarried following the forced announcement.
“I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath,” she shared with the publication.
“I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.”
Mariah went on to suggest that there’s “an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do? It’s like, [sings] ‘What are you going to do?'”
Following the loss, Mariah Carey later went on to welcome twins Monroe and Moroccan in 2011 with her then-husband, rapper Nick Cannon.
The news comes following criticism of a past interview between Ellen DeGeneres and actress Sofia Vergara, though the Modern Family actor has insisted that she always felt like she was “in on the joke” whenever the presenter would poke fun at her.
“Two comedians having fun with each other to entertain,” Sofía tweeted. “I was never a victim, guys, I was always in on the joke.”
