Polaris have announced a last-minute change to their Hellbound Cruise performances, with frontman Jamie Hails forced to sit out the inaugural heavy music voyage due to illness.
The Sydney metalcore outfit confirmed the news today, Thursday, October 22nd — the same day the three-night cruise is scheduled to depart Sydney, revealing that Inertia vocalist Julian Latouche will step in for Hails after being given less than 24 hours to learn two sets of Polaris material.
According to a statement shared on social media, Hails became unwell on the band’s flight home to Australia and was subsequently diagnosed with a respiratory tract infection, alongside tonsillitis, bronchitis, pharyngitis, and uvulitis.
Despite efforts to recover in time, the vocalist has been medically advised against performing due to the risk of serious, long-term damage to his voice.
“As we couldn’t bear the thought of pulling out of this weekend’s performances at the last minute, we’ve had to make the difficult decision for Jamie to stay home to recover,” the band explained.
Rather than cancel their appearances, Polaris have enlisted Latouche, whose own band Inertia has previously supported them on tour, to take on the considerable challenge of fronting one of Australia’s biggest metalcore acts at almost no notice.
The band praised their fellow musician for stepping up, explaining that he had “bravely jumped on board” to learn the material in time.

“We know that we can rely on his vocal talents and your collective energy to create some amazing memories over this weekend,” Polaris told fans.
The announcement comes at the end of a turbulent few months for Hellbound Cruise organisers, who have navigated several significant lineup changes in the lead-up to the event.
Most recently, Melbourne metalcore outfit Windwaker withdrew on October 13th, just nine days before departure, after synths and samples player and production manager Connor Robins made the decision to step away from touring for the remainder of 2026 to prioritise his health. Fellow Melbourne outfit Dream On Dreamer were subsequently announced as their replacement.
In September, Byron Bay metalcore heavyweights In Hearts Wake pulled out due to an unexpected family situation requiring them to remain at home with loved ones. Canberra alternative rock outfit Hands Like Houses joined the bill in their place.
That followed the August withdrawal of Northlane, who cited scheduling changes surrounding their forthcoming album Anemoia and accompanying national headline tour. Gold Coast favourites Sunk Loto were brought in as their replacement.
Earlier changes also saw The Beautiful Monument and Diamond Construct depart the original lineup, with DREGG and Late 90s among the additions.
Despite the reshuffles, the sold-out cruise is set to bring together some of the biggest names in Australian heavy music, led by headliners Parkway Drive alongside Polaris, The Butterfly Effect, Make Them Suffer, and a host of emerging and established acts.
The inaugural Hellbound Cruise, presented by Choose Your Cruise and Destroy All Lines, takes place aboard the Carnival Splendour, departing Sydney on Thursday, October 22nd before returning on Sunday, October 25th.
So far, the 2027 cruise lineup remains unchanged.
