A whole new generation of Gleeks will receive their own campy covers of classic songs and Hot 100 hits as Glee returns in a reboot at Disney+ and Hulu. Ryan Murphy has connected with collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan to bring the musical dramedy series back with 20th Television.
Murphy completed a script for the revival earlier this year, telling Entertainment Tonight, “We have a script. Brad, Ian, and I — who wrote all the first two seasons — have written something. I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
Lea Michele is among the original cast members returning to the show, according to Variety. “It’s still early-ish days, but it feels good and we’re happy to get the band back together,” a source told the outlet.
Chord Overstreet will reprise his role as Sam Evans. “Reunited and it feels so good,” he posted on X. Heather Morris is also on board. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Yes ladies and gentle men of women, rumors are true. Brittany S Pierce was in fact lost in the sewers for all these years. But I’m here to inform you that she is alive and well… And back for more.”
The original Glee ran for six seasons with 121 episodes airing between 2009 and 2015. It also starred Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Matthew Morrison, Dianna Agron, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Naya Rivera, Darren Criss, Chris Colfer, and others.
The cast mourned Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, on- and offscreen following his death in 2013 from an accidental overdose. In the years since the series concluded, another loss was suffered as Rivera, who played Santana Lopez, died from drowning in 2020 after going boating with her four-year-old son. Salling, who played Noah Puckerman, died by suicide in 2018 shortly before he would have been sentenced for charges relating to possession of child pornography.
It isn’t known at the time what other original cast members will be returning for the new Glee. Earlier this month, Colfer told Bustle, “I know nothing and have heard absolutely nothing.… It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya [Rivera] is gone. But I do know that Glee fans would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no.”
