Powderfinger reunion rumours are heating up after mysterious billboards and light shows linked to the beloved Australian rock band appeared across the country.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ first shared footage on Tuesday of a cryptic display spotted in Melbourne, which appeared to contain several clues pointing towards the Brisbane rockers. The mystery has since deepened, with billboards appearing in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane alongside a new Instagram account called @thereturnoftheelectrichorsemen.

The name itself offers perhaps the most obvious Powderfinger connection, referencing “(Return of) the Electric Horseman”, the closing track from the band’s 1996 album Double Allergic.

Its first post reads: “I see your signs on the street now. Do you?”, seemingly riffing on the opening line of Powderfinger favourite “My Happiness” (“I see your shadow on the street now.”)

The account’s bio, meanwhile, features five horse emojis – potentially representing the band’s five members Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John Collins and Jon Coghill.

A series of numbers and statistics shared as part of the campaign have only fuelled speculation further. Among them is the date “13.11.2010”, when Powderfinger played the final show of their farewell ‘Sunsets’ tour at Brisbane’s Riverstage.

Other clues reference seven albums and 18 ARIA Awards, both matching Powderfinger’s career, while the band’s official verified Facebook account has also reportedly interacted with posts about the campaign.

Despite the increasingly obvious breadcrumbs, Powderfinger have not officially announced a reunion or confirmed they are behind the mysterious rollout.

The band called time on their career in 2010 after more than two decades together, signing off with the mammoth ‘Sunsets’ farewell tour. Then in May 2020, all five members came together remotely for the ‘One Night Lonely’ livestream, raising more than $500,000 for Support Act and Beyond Blue.
