Marvel is back on top. Avengers Endgame: Encore has, unsurprisingly, claimed the Australian box office crown.
The special re-release of the 2019 blockbuster debuted at No. 1 over the weekend (Thursday, September 24th – Sunday, September 27th), opening with $2.53 million just days after tickets went on sale for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. Globally, Avengers Endgame: Encore scored a massive US$68 million in the box office.
Avengers: Doomsday, meanwhile, has also made waves at the local box office months before its release, having generated more than $1 million in ticket presales within its first 24 hours. This made it the biggest opening day of ticket presales for any film in Australia this year, as well as the highest 24-hour result in five years.
Resident Evil slipped to second place in its second weekend, adding another $2.48 million in the box office. The Sony release has now amassed $7.70 million locally. Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt, debuted at No. 3 with $1.89 million over the weekend, taking its total to $2.20 million including earlier screenings.
Forgotten Island climbed from seventh to fourth place, earning $1.07 million, which brought its Australian total to $2.58 million. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie also continued its strong run, moving from eighth to fifth place with $808,000. The animated film has now grossed $3.86 million locally, after three weeks in cinemas.
Coyote vs. Acme held relatively steady in its second weekend, taking $800,000 to land at No. 6 and pushing its cumulative total to $2.14 million. Practical Magic 2, which debuted at No. 1 earlier this month, fell to seventh with $794,000, for a local total of $6.36 million.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey remained inside the top 10 in its 11th weekend, taking another $743,000 at No. 8. The epic has now grossed an impressive $67.54 million at the Australian box office. Similarly, Spider-Man: Brand New Day followed at No. 9 with $711,000, bringing its nine-week Australian total to $87.99 million.

Rounding out the top 10 was Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, which jumped from 12th place after taking $443,000, up 131% on the previous weekend. It has now crossed the $1 million mark locally.
