Paul Kelly has offered up a brand new single, releasing a cover of the classic track “Hummin’ to Myself” earlier today.
Serving as his first piece of original material since the release of Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds back in October, Kelly shared the cover – originally recorded in the early ’30s – on streaming services earlier today.
“I first heard ‘Hummin’ to Myself a few years ago at Claypots Bar in St Kilda sung by Margie Lou Dyer and her old time jazz quartet,” Kelly wrote of the track. “I fell in love with it straight away and started messing around with my own version on guitar.
“During one of our recording sessions two years ago I threw it to the band who caught it and ran with it. My daughters Maddy and Memphis helped me out with the hums. The song is nearly a hundred years old but still speaks loud and clear.”
Recorded with his faithful team of Peter Luscombe, Ashley Naylor, Bill McDonald, Cameron Bruce, daughters Maddy and Memphis, and produced by Steven Schram, the track was likely recorded during the same sessions that spawned Nature back in 2018.
Complementing the track, Kelly also shared an Andy Doherty-directed music video which showcases the artist’s skills at AFL.
In related news, Paul Kelly has been named as one of the many artists set to perform as part of the Music From the Home Front concert this weekend. Taking place on ANZAC Day this Saturday, Kelly’s livestreamed performance will be broadcast on the Nine Network, and will appear alongside slots from Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett, Missy Higgins, and much more.
