Rob Reiner won his third Emmy on Sunday. The filmmaker, who died in December, was posthumously honoured for his performance on The Bear, winning Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his three-episode arc in Season 4.
During the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys, presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award on Reiner’s behalf. “We all wish he was here,” she said as the audience gave Reiner a standing ovation.
Reiner previously won an Emmy in 1974 and in 1978 for supporting actor in a comedy series for his role on CBS’ All In the Family. His role as Albert Schnur, a restaurant franchiser who mentors Ebraheim (Edwin Lee Gibson), was one of his final major television performances. His final onscreen appearance was a cameo as George Washington on HBO’s Larry David Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, created by Larry David.
Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner were stabbed to death on Dec. 14, 2025. Their son Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors identifying the alleged murder weapon as a knife. In February, he pleaded not guilty. Last month, a court blocked Nick’s request for access to his more than $1.5 million trust fund. His next hearing is set for Sept. 15.
The late filmmaker’s Emmy marks the first posthumous Emmy for an on-camera performance since Raúl Julia won for The Burning Season in 1995. Additionally, the 48-year gap between Reiner’s 1978 victory and this award is now the longest span between acting Emmy wins in the history of the awards. The previous record of 37 years was set by Reiner’s father, Carl Reiner, who won in 1958 for Caesar’s Hour and later in 1995 for Mad About You.
The 78th Emmy Awards will be held at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live on Sept. 14 with Mariska Hargitay as the host. The Bear is up for a total of eight Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
