BABYMONSTER are gearing up for their first-ever shows in Australia and New Zealand this December, in support of their current world tour.

The K-Pop girl group will kick off the arena run in Auckland, followed by stops in Melbourne and Sydney. And to celebrate the news, we sat down with BABYMONSTER to talk all about the shows, new music on the way and what’s next for the superstar outfit.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ: It’s your first concert tour of Australia. Have any of you been here before, whether professionally or personally?

Pharita: Yes, I’ve been to Australia before. It’s such a beautiful place, and there’s so much to see and do. I have a lot of great memories from my time there. This time, I’ll be going with the members and also getting to spend time with MONSTIEZ, so I’m really looking forward to making even more great memories together.

Chiquita: This will be my first time in Australia, so I’m really excited to finally visit and perform there. I’m especially looking forward to meeting Australian MONSTIEZ in person at the shows. I also can’t wait to enjoy Australia’s beautiful nature and make lots of great memories while I’m there. And if I get the chance, I’d love to see a koala and some other Australian wildlife too!

Your first full album, Drip, sold over a million copies, and you’ve played massive venues internationally already. Did you anticipate BABYMONSTER blowing up as quickly as you have?

Asa: We honestly never expected to receive this much love and support, so it still feels surreal sometimes. We’re incredibly grateful for all of it. MONSTIEZ have been with us and supported us from the very beginning, and we really wouldn’t be here without them. We’re also really thankful to everyone at our company who works hard behind the scenes and has supported us along the way.

Love Music?

Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian/New Zealand music and globally.

We want to keep working hard and never lose the mindset we had when we first started. At the same time, we want to keep growing and improving, and show that growth through our music and performances as BABYMONSTER.

Rora: I still feel like we have so much to learn and a lot of room to grow, so sometimes it’s hard to believe everything that’s happening. It really hits me when we perform in different countries and get to meet MONSTIEZ from all over the world. Those moments make me realise just how many people are supporting us, and I’m always so grateful for that. We want to keep making special memories with MONSTIEZ and continue growing as BABYMONSTER, so we can give back all the love and support we’ve received along the way.

Your third mini album, Choom, was released this past May. Throughout this promotion, you’ve been showcasing a variety of performances, each highlighting the distinct character of a different track. As you prepared these stages, what was your main focus, and were there any particular aspects you gave extra thought to along the way?

Ruka: Each song on this album has its own mood and charm, so we really focused on bringing out what makes each one unique. We also wanted to show a different side of ourselves with every song, so we paid close attention to our facial expressions, gestures, and energy on stage.

When it came to the performances, we focused on matching the mood of the song while still bringing BABYMONSTER’s own style and teamwork to it. We put a lot of thought into each one, hoping MONSTIEZ would get to see a new side of us every time. .

Ahyeon: Since each song has a different mood, we wanted to bring that out on stage as well. We practised a lot to make sure our live vocals and performances came together naturally. We wanted MONSTIEZ to notice something new every time they watched us, so we really focused on our expressions and the little details in each song while trying to connect with the music.

Is work underway on a new album?

Ruka: We’re focused on the tour and connecting with MONSTIEZ right now, but I think we’ll start getting ready for our next album soon as well. We’re so grateful for all the love and support you’ve shown Choom and our digital single, “SUGAR HONEY ICE TEA,” released in June. We’ll work hard to come back with another album full of great songs and hopefully give back some of the love and support we’ve received. We also hope we’ll get the chance to return to Australia and New Zealand with our next album and see MONSTIEZ there again.

Rora: It’s still a little too early to share any details, but the members and I have been talking a lot about our next album and the direction we want to take with it. We’re working hard to make sure it still feels like BABYMONSTER while also showing a different side of ourselves from what you’ve seen before. I hope you’ll look forward to it!

Any messages for your Australia and New Zealand fans ahead of the shows?

Ahyeon: We’ve been looking forward to meeting MONSTIEZ in Australia and New Zealand for such a long time. We’re so grateful for all the love and support you’ve always given us, and we’re so happy that this tour is finally giving us the chance to meet you in person. Since it’ll be our first time there, we’re especially excited. We’ve been working hard to prepare for the shows, and we hope we can give some of that love back through our performances.

Most of all, we hope everyone has a great time and that we can make lots of special memories together.

Chiquita: The members and I are all really excited to finally meet MONSTIEZ in Australia and New Zealand on this tour. We hope we can sing along, have a great time at the shows, and create lots of wonderful memories. We’re working hard to put on our best show for all the MONSTIEZ who have been showering us with love since day one.
